Today I took the oath of office and was sworn in to the Utah State Senate. I’m proud to represent our community in the state legislature. Feeling ready to get to work!

A few weeks ago I attended the Western Leadership

A few weeks ago I attended the Western Leadership Academy, a multi-day leadership training experience hosted by CSG West in Colorado Springs. I spent four days with 40 legislators from the mountain region states learning about good governance, effective communication, navigating conflict, and consensus-building.

I met some fantastic legislators from both sides of the aisle who are working to make a difference in their respective states. I’m excited to apply these new skills to strengthen relationships, increase civility and collaboration, and improve our legislative process.

Over the past two days I joined a delegation of st

Over the past two days I joined a delegation of state and local leaders on a site visit to Miami to learn about Miami’s system of criminal justice diversion and behavioral health services. Using an innovative, data-driven model and several public-private partnerships, Miami has greatly increased the number of individuals who are diverted from jail into services that better address their underlying mental health or substance abuse needs. They have seen a corresponding decrease in recidivism rates.

In the absence of good public policy, jails have become the de facto mental health and substance use disorder care systems. We can do better. I’m proud to be part of this Utah group working on a model of diversion that will increase outcomes for those in need of targeted rehabilitative services, improve recidivism rates, and lower criminal justice costs for all levels of government.

I am honored and humbled to represent our Senate District 14 community in the Utah State Legislature. Thank you to so many of you for your support, political engagement, ideas, and most importantly, being part of the democratic process and voting. Thank you, also, to Dan Sorensen for running a friendly, positive race.

The 2023 legislative session is fast approaching, and there are so many issues facing our community and state. I’m ready to get to work.
