Priorities

My Policy Priorities

Whatever the issue, Stephanie will stand up and fight for what is right.

Fighting Corruption in Government

Right now, Utahns’ trust in government is low. We’ve watched as the majority has pulled funding for critical services, failed to take meaningful action on the Great Salt Lake, challenged voter-passed independent redistricting, and approved a massive data center over widespread public objection. I will fight against corruption and represent the best of what government can and should be: someone who listens, is transparent, takes genuine accountability, and advocates fiercely for the issues that matter most to our community. Government must work for the people it serves.

Making Life More Affordable

Everyday affordability – the cost of housing, groceries, gas, etc., — has become out of reach for so many Utahns. I am fighting for policies that restore affordability and ensure daily necessities don’t break the bank. That means advocating for fair wages, strong unions, small businesses, and better work-family supports. I am also fighting to make housing more affordable, healthcare more accessible, and innovative childcare solutions that work for Utah families.

Protecting the Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is facing an unprecedented crisis. If it continues to shrink more lakebed will be exposed, resulting in harmful pollutants that spread into nearby communities and the loss of critical ecosystems. We must take urgent action to protect and preserve the Great Salt Lake. We need to invest in agricultural water efficiency programs, reduce corporate water waste, modernize infrastructure, and increase funding to restore water levels to the lake. We cannot support massive data centers while our Great Sale Lake runs dry. Smart water policy requires regional cooperation and long-term vision. I will continue to fight for policies that protect and preserve the Great Salt Lake.

Defending Fair Maps & Democracy

Our democracy only works with a representative government and a process that upholds the will of the people. As your state senator, I have fought to protect Proposition 4, the citizen’s initiative that creates an independent redistricting commission to draw fair maps. I have also fought to defend fair maps, honest elections, and the right to citizen-led change. I’m proud to receive the endorsement of Better Boundaries and will continue working alongside them for representative maps and a government that listens to the people it represents.

An independent judiciary is essential to a functioning democracy. However, over the past couple of years the legislative majority has passed bills designed to undermine judicial independence. It has retaliated against the courts for decisions it dislikes by packing the Supreme Court, withholding essential funding, and amending court processes to further its own objectives. We must uphold the constitutional separation of powers and ensure courts are free from political pressure and legislative interference. Judges must be able to make decisions based on the law and the facts, without fear of retribution. As an attorney and a state senator, I will continue to defend judicial independence in Utah.

Improving Air Quality

Air pollution impacts our quality of life. The inversion and ozone along the Wasatch Front are bad for our health and bad for our economy. We must work to clean up our air, reduce vehicle emissions, and encourage more green energy use. Climate change is a generational problem, but with innovative solutions and bold leadership, we can take action to reverse its course. This year I passed SB208, which cracks down on unlawful vehicle polluters. I also ran SB176, which would transition the state from gas-powered lawn equipment to electric alternatives. Both bills reduce harmful emissions and help improve air quality. I will continue to fight for good policies that protect our environment and improve air quality.

Strengthening Public Education

In recent years the legislature has attempted to micromanage education, placing unnecessary restrictions on school curriculum, imposing burdensome reporting requirements on teachers, and replacing the discernment of local school districts for that of its own by banning books, flags, and comprehensive sex education. Our educators need resources, support, and elected officials that trust them to do their jobs. I will continue to fight for adequate funding, competitive teacher pay, smaller class sizes, mental health supports, and paraprofessionals who can help meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of our students. I will fight to ensure decision-making is left in the hands of educators and local leaders.

I strongly oppose school voucher programs which divert taxpayer dollars from public education to private schools. I voted against the Utah Fits All voucher program and I voted against HB267, which banned teachers and other public sector unions from collective bargaining. I will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen our schools, support teachers, and cultivate a culture of trust and collaboration.

Standing Up for Marginalized Communities & Fighting ICE Overreach

I am a tireless advocate for vulnerable and marginalized communities. I will never stop fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, reproductive freedom, immigrant rights, and a criminal justice system that is more equitable, transparent, and just.

I oppose efforts that create fear or target individuals unfairly, including overbearing ICE actions in our communities. Utah families deserve to feel safe in their homes, schools, and workplaces. I will continue to oppose an ICE detention facility in Utah.
